Abstract
In the last few years, the Low Earth Orbit (LEO) has been used by CubeSats for high data rate transmission (HDRT) applications. Nonetheless, the earth-to-space channel suffers from various impairments due to the LEO geometry and channel conditions that affect CubeSat communications. To overcome this challenge, variable coding modulation (VCM) technology has been employed to properly utilize network resources and increase satellite data transmission throughput. This paper provides a VCM-based optimized transmission approach as an upgrade to the selected communication subsystem operating at S-band for the Moroccan nanosatellite (UM5-EOSat) to perform Earth observation missions. This new approach aims to enhance the data link performance by adapting the forward-error correction (FEC) technique to the satellite motion over the ground station. Applying the flow design of the proposed VCM-based data communication system, with a specific ground station in Rabat, can enhance the overall data link throughput by 87% compared to a typical constant coding modulation (CCM) system, while also tripling the data capacity rate during the concept of operation of this nanosatellite.
