Abstract
The Euphrates River is one of the largest rivers in Southwest Asia. Its length reaches 2786 km and feeds an area of more than 400000 km2, which is about 30 million people. The Euphrates River passes through three countries (Turkey, Syria, and Iraq). This paper aims to simulate a flood wave in the current status of the Euphrates that results from the probability of a dambreak of Haditha dam, located along the Euphrates River in Al-Anbar governorate, Iraq. The expected flood waves will extend downstream of the dam until Falluja City. The flood wave propagation is simulated by the 2D HEC RAS model, which has utilized Shallow Water or Diffusion Wave Equations of unsteady flow with the Finite Volume Method (FVM); these equations are based on the momentum and conservation of mass equations. It is important to study the probability of dam failure to reduce the dangers and damages that may occur in the lives and structures along the main cities downstream of the dam. The geometry of the model is prepared depending on the Digital Elevation Model (DEM) covering the study area of the Euphrates River from Haditha Dam to Falluja City. The length of this reach is about 250 km. Stage hydrographs and arrival times in relevant locations are produced to describe the flood wave. Furthermore, an inundation map of the flood is produced using the model results. The results offer a way to predict flood extent and show that the impact of a predicted dambreak of Haditha Dam will be serious; therefore, suitable management is needed to overcome this risk. Moreover, the maps produced by this study are useful for developing plans for sustainable flood management.
