Abstract
Many studies have focused on improving the energy performance of household refrigerators and finding out their
performance under different operating conditions. However, there seems to be a gap regarding the potential for electrical
energy savings due to retrofitting household refrigerators. This study focuses on the replacement potential of household
refrigerators eight or more years old in poor households in Mexico City. The study uses a stratified sampling methodology.
The results show that it is advisable to replace 77.75% of the household refrigerators that are in operation in poor
households in Mexico City. The replacement of household refrigerators with energy-efficient equipment represents 36% of
the electrical energy consumption for food refrigeration in the domestic sector in Mexico City.
